I'm a married mother of five and yogi who is passionate about Bone Density Health!
Osteoporosis and Osteopenia are often called the silent disease,
because you don’t know you have a problem until you have a nasty fall or suffer a fracture and feel the pain.
And I'm here to help.
The first experience involved my oldest son.
Since an infant he had chronic asthma, eczema and other health challenges. Eventually, a doctor suggested we have him tested for food allergies and we learned that we was allergic to wheat, corn, oats and soy, everything that I had been feeding him! I immersed myself in learning about nutrition and alternative recipes as I adapted our family’s diet for my son’s needs.
I learned that the optimal diet is different for each individual, and that a healthy, nutritious diet requires active management.
The second experience involved my own health.
As the daily tasks of motherhood and caring for my grandmother took over my life, I often felt weak and tired. Lifting heavy items became a challenge.
I knew that in order to care for my loved ones, I needed to first take care of myself, so I restarted my yoga practice.
The results were outstanding. I felt mentally and physically stronger.
Wanting to share the benefit of yoga, I attended yoga teacher training and became a 500 hour Yoga Alliance Yoga Instructor and a 90 hour Children’s Yoga Instructor, and started teaching yoga in person and online. Practicing yoga has blessed my life and my family.
My third defining experience was with my Grandmother.
As my family grew, my grandmother enjoyed spending time with each of my children. For the first few years she would get on the floor and play with the kids. After a few years she fell and had a hip fracture. She recovered, but her mobility became more limited.
At the time, I didn’t know there was anything that could be done to improve her bone health and accepted her situation as it was. A few years later, she had a second fall and significantly lost her freedom and mobility as a result. She required constant help with simple tasks she was previously able to do for herself.
A few years after my grandmother passed, a fellow yoga instructor informed me about scientific studies that showed practicing yoga could help people with bone loss strengthen their bones. Immediately, I knew this could be a gamechanger in helping others avoid the struggles my grandmother and I went through.
I learned all I could about osteoporosis and osteoporosis treatments. I completed a Yoga for Osteoporosis Certification with the physician who conducted the original studies, Dr. Loren Fishman, and became BoneFit certified.
